Fort Smith Officer Kyle Newman Critically Injured in Overnight Shooting

The Fort Smith Police Department and the surrounding community are rallying around Officer Kyle Newman after he was critically wounded in a shooting early Sunday morning and is now described by police officials as “fighting for his life.”

According to Fort Smith police, the incident unfolded around 1:23 a.m. on May 17 after officers responded to the McClure AMP parking lot off Massard Road regarding reports of juveniles gathered in the area.

Investigators said a white pickup truck sped past officers before crashing into a ditch nearby. Officer Newman reportedly approached the driver to investigate possible driving while intoxicated concerns while another officer remained with the juveniles and parents who had arrived at the scene.

Police identified the driver as Joshua Keller, 27, of Fort Smith.

Shooting During Investigation

According to investigators, Keller became argumentative during the interaction and attempted to return to his vehicle.

Authorities say that while Officer Newman attempted to detain him outside the truck, Keller allegedly produced a handgun and shot the officer in the neck.

Police stated that despite being critically wounded, Officer Newman returned fire as he fell to the ground while another officer immediately alerted dispatch that shots had been fired. Officers also fired toward the suspect vehicle as it fled the area.

The incident quickly escalated into a pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

Pursuit Ends in Second Officer-Involved Shooting

Investigators said the suspect later crashed the white pickup truck near Interstate 540 northbound and Grand Avenue.

As officers approached the vehicle, another officer-involved shooting occurred. Authorities have not publicly released all details surrounding what led officers to open fire at that location, stating that certain information is being withheld to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Police confirmed that a handgun was recovered inside the truck.

Joshua Keller was pronounced dead at the scene.
