The Richmond community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of George Whitfield, an 83-year-old Richmond resident whose body was tragically discovered in the James River on May 19.

According to Richmond Police, emergency responders were alerted after a person fishing near Great Shiplock Park on Dock Street noticed a body in the water and called 911. The Richmond Fire Department Water Rescue Team responded quickly, launching from Ancarrow’s Landing Park to recover Mr. Whitfield from the river. Despite their efforts, he was sadly pronounced deceased after being brought back to shore.

As authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding his passing, loved ones are left grieving the loss of a man whose life carried decades of memories, experiences, and connections that mattered deeply to those around him.
