TRAGIC DISCOVERY: MISSING 93-YEAR-OLD FOUND AT LOCAL FISHING SPOT

“A Final Walk: Community Mourns the Loss of a Cherished Matriarch”

The search for Hisako Gaunce, a 93-year-old resident of Salem, came to a devastating end on Sunday, March 15, 2026. After failing to return from what was intended to be a routine morning outing, Hisako was found deceased in Mill Creek, a location known to locals as a peaceful fishing and walking area.

    The Timeline of the Search

The alarm was first raised early Sunday morning when Hisako’s family noticed she had not returned home.

    • The Departure: Hisako, known for her independence despite her age, had left her family’s apartment in the 5000 block of Gaffin Road SE for an early morning walk. Reports indicate she also had a scheduled hair appointment, a routine she looked forward to.

    • The Mobilization: When she did not return, the Salem Police Department initiated an immediate canvass of the area. They were joined by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and an Oregon State Police tracking canine.

    • The Discovery: At approximately 11:50 AM, the tracking canine located Hisako in Mill Creek, only about 200 yards from her family’s home.

A “Shining Light” in the Community

Hisako was a familiar and friendly face in her neighborhood. Neighbors described her as a “shining light” who enjoyed the fresh air and the natural beauty of the creek area.

“She was 93 years young and had more energy than people half her age. Seeing her out on her walks was a staple of our mornings. To lose her like this, so close to home, is just heart-wrenching.” — Local Resident

    Investigation Status

The Marion County Medical Examiner responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.

    • Initial Findings: Authorities have stated that there is no criminal investigation at this time, suggesting the death appears to be a tragic accident, possibly resulting from a fall or a medical event during her walk.

    • Safety Reminders: The incident has prompted local officials to remind families of elderly residents to consider wearable GPS devices, especially for those who maintain an active lifestyle outdoors.

    Community Tribute

The Salem Police Department expressed their deepest condolences to the Gaunce family, thanking the numerous volunteers and agencies that assisted in the search. A small memorial of flowers has already begun to grow near the bridge at Mill Creek where she was found.

    How to Honor Her Memory

In lieu of a formal public service at this time, the family has asked for privacy. Those wishing to honor Hisako are encouraged to:

    1. Cherish Your Elders: Take a moment to check in on an elderly neighbor or relative.

    2. Support Search and Rescue: Donations can be made to local Search and Rescue volunteer teams who work tirelessly in cases like these.

    3. A Moment of Silence: Remember Hisako the next time you enjoy a walk by the water—a simple pleasure she held dear.

SOMBRE DISCOVERIES ON THE BLUE LINE: TWO LIVES LOST

CHICAGO, IL — Chicago police and CTA officials are working to determine the causes of two separate deaths discovered on the Blue Line within the last week. The incidents, occurring just days apart, have cast a shadow over the daily commute for thousands of West Side and Loop travelers.

    1. Discovery at Racine Station: Wednesday, April 8

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, April 8, 2026, a routine train inspection led to a grim discovery at the Racine station in the West Loop.

    • The Victim: A 54-year-old man was found unresponsive inside a Blue Line train car.

    • The Discovery: CTA personnel alerted emergency services around 8:30 AM after finding the man while the train was at the platform.

    • Current Status: Chicago Police have opened a death investigation. At this time, the cause of death remains “unexplained,” as there were no immediate signs of trauma or foul play.

    2. Tragedy Near the Eisenhower Expressway: Saturday, April 5

Earlier in the week, a larger-scale emergency response was triggered when a body was discovered in the subterranean section of the Blue Line tracks.

    • The Incident: Just after 10:00 AM on Saturday, officers found an unresponsive man lying on the tracks inside the train tunnel between the Central and Laramie stations.

    • Police Activity: The discovery followed a chaotic series of events nearby, including a vehicle crash involving an Acura and an alleged backyard burglary.

    • The Connection: While the proximity is striking, CPD has not yet confirmed if the man found on the tracks was involved in the preceding police chase or the burglary.

“Every life lost on our transit system is a tragedy. We are working closely with the Medical Examiner to provide answers to the families involved and to ensure the safety of all our passengers.” — Chicago Transit Authority Statement

    A System Under Scrutiny

These deaths come at a time of heightened tension for the CTA. Just this week, family members of previous victims, including the wife of Raymond Harrison (killed on the Pink Line in December), spoke before the CTA Board demanding increased security presence on trains.

    • Safety Advocacy: Commuters have expressed growing concern over “unexplained” deaths, citing a need for more frequent welfare checks on passengers, especially during late-night and early-morning hours.

    • Community Mourning: For many, these men represent “shining lights” within their own circles—sons, brothers, or neighbors whose journeys ended far too soon in the isolation of a train car or tunnel.

    Current Investigation & Autopsy

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting autopsies and toxicology tests for both individuals.

    • Identity: The identity of the 54-year-old man found at Racine is being withheld pending family notification.

    • The “Unknown” Factor: Until toxicology reports are returned, police are keeping all possibilities open, including medical emergencies or potential exposure to the elements.

TRAGEDY ON THE GRAND PARKWAY: TWO LIVES LOST IN RAINY COLLISION

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — A somber Saturday afternoon turned into a scene of heartbreak on April 4, 2026, as a high-impact crash claimed the lives of two drivers on SH 99. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is currently investigating the role that wet road conditions played in this senseless loss.

    The Incident Details

At approximately 2:30 PM, emergency responders were called to a stretch of the Grand Parkway near Community Drive following reports of a severe two-vehicle wreck.

    • The Chain of Events: A southbound 2008 Chrysler Pacifica reportedly lost control—potentially due to hydroplaning on standing water—and crossed the median into the northbound lanes.

    • The Collision: The Pacifica struck a 2008 GMC Sierra pickup truck head-on. The impact was so severe that the Pacifica reportedly rolled and caught fire.

    • The Aftermath: Despite the rapid arrival of Montgomery County and Liberty County emergency crews, the outcome was tragic.

    Remembering the Victims
