IN LOVING MEMORY: MARWA BARAKZAI (2009–2026)

A Daughter of the Community Gone Too Soon”

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — A devastating silence has fallen over the Peninsula following the confirmation that Marwa Barakzai, a 16-year-old student at Menchville High School, has passed away. Marwa had been the subject of a massive multi-agency search since she first went missing on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

The Disappearance: March 19, 2026

Marwa was last seen on that Thursday afternoon under circumstances that sparked immediate concern.

  • The Sighting: At approximately 6:00 PM, Marwa got off her school bus on Fontaine Road. Surveillance footage from the bus and nearby Ring doorbells showed her departing the vehicle without any apparent signs of distress.

  • The Clues: Investigative efforts later revealed that Marwa’s Chromebook had been left behind at the bus stop, and she had requested to be dropped off at a stop that was not her usual location.

  • The Search: For weeks, the Newport News Police, bloodhound tracking teams, and hundreds of community volunteers canvassed woods and neighborhoods near Warwick High School and Logan Place.

A Community Grieves

On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the Peninsula Islamic Community Center and the Barakzai family released a somber statement confirming that the search had ended.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear sister, Marwa. She was a shining light in our youth programs, a dedicated student, and a beloved daughter. We ask for the community’s prayers and privacy as the family navigates this unimaginable grief.” — PICC Statement

Investigation & Discovery

While the family has confirmed the tragic news, several details remain under investigation by authorities.

  • The Discovery: Recent reports indicated that emergency crews responded to a body found in the water of a Newport News lake earlier this week. While formal forensics are ongoing, the family was notified shortly after this discovery.

  • Cause of Death: Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death. During the search, police had initially categorized the case as a potential runaway situation, but the final circumstances of her passing are currently being reviewed by the Medical Examiner.

A Legacy of Faith and Fashion

Marwa was known for her vibrant personality and her commitment to her faith. During the search, she was often described by the black and white hijab and black sneakers she was wearing when last seen—a symbol of the identity she carried with pride.

Memorial Services

The Peninsula Islamic Community Center has coordinated a Janazah (funeral prayer) to honor Marwa’s life.

  • Community Support: A support fund has been established to assist the Barakzai family with funeral costs and to create a memorial scholarship in Marwa’s name to support other young Muslim women in the Newport News area.

In Loving Memory: We stand with the Barakzai family and the entire Muslim community of the Peninsula. May Marwa rest in eternal peace.
