SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MARINE KILLED IN NORTH CAROLINA STABBING

“A Hero Lost: Inland Empire Family Mourns 21-Year-Old Lance Cpl. Daniel Montano”

WILMINGTON, NC — The Wilmington Police Department is investigating the “heinous” stabbing of Lance Cpl. Daniel Montano, 21, a U.S. Marine originally from Hesperia, California. Montano, who was stationed at Camp Lejeune, was killed during a massive early-morning brawl on Sunday, April 5, 2026, in downtown Wilmington.

The Incident: Sunday, April 5, 2026

The violence erupted at approximately 2:00 AM in the 100 block of North Front Street as local bars were beginning to close.

  • The Scene: Police officers were already in the area responding to reports of multiple fights involving large groups of people. During the “unexplained” chaos, Montano and another man were stabbed.

  • The Struggle: Viral video of the incident shows a chaotic scene where officers deployed pepper spray to disperse the crowd. Montano was seen bleeding heavily on the sidewalk before being assisted by a fellow Marine who used a shirt to try and stop the bleeding.

  • The Outcome: Montano was rushed to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day. The second stabbing victim survived after officers applied a life-saving tourniquet at the scene.

A “Shining Light” for the Inland Empire

Daniel Montano was a graduate of Sultana High School in Hesperia and was described by his family as a young man who brought immense joy to everyone he met.

  • Military Service: Montano served as a United States Marine assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines Regiment at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC.

  • Family Tribute: In a statement, his family shared that he was “not only dedicated to his country, but also deeply loved by his family. To us, he was more than a Marine—he was a son, a brother, and someone who brought so much light into our lives.”

Investigation & Suspect Information

While Wilmington Police Chief Ryan Zuidema has defended the officers’ initial response during the “volatile” brawl, the hunt for the perpetrator remains a top priority.

  • Person of Interest: Police have released surveillance images of a man they are seeking for questioning. He is described as a Black male with a medium build, wearing a light-colored fleece-lined denim jacket, a pink shirt, and a dark blue head covering (durag) with long hair visible.

  • Status: As of April 13, 2026, authorities are reviewing extensive CCTV and bystander footage to identify the individual responsible for the fatal blow. No official charges have been publicly announced, though a “man is now behind bars” in connection to the broader violence that night.

“They have no idea who is who. They don’t know who’s a suspect, who’s a victim… they’re dealing with trying to assess what’s going on in a very fluid and dangerous situation.” — Wilmington Police Chief Ryan Zuidema

A Community in Mourning

A memorial has been established on North Front Street, where fellow Marines and local residents have gathered to leave flowers and pay their respects. The “senseless” loss of such a young life has reignited discussions regarding safety in downtown entertainment districts during the late-night hours.

How You Can Help

Investigators are urging anyone who was in the downtown area between midnight and 3:00 AM on April 5 to come forward.

  • Digital Evidence: If you have cell phone video or photos of the fights on Front Street, please share them with the Wilmington Police Department.

  • Contact: Reach out to the WPD at (910) 343-3609 or use the Tip411 app.

  • Support the Family: A GoFundMe has been established by the Montano family to help cover the “unprepared” financial burden of bringing Daniel home to California for his final rest.

In Loving Memory: We stand with the Montano family and the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines. May Daniel’s dedication to his country be remembered, and may his family find peace as they seek justice for this “unexplained” tragedy.
