TRAGEDY IN BARRETTO: TWO 4-YEAR-OLD COUSINS PERISH IN ABANDONED CAR

“A Heartbreaking Loss: Young Boys Succumb to Extreme Heat and Suffocation”

OLONGAPO CITY, PH — The community of Barangay Barretto is in mourning after two four-year-old cousins were found dead inside a non-operational vehicle on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Authorities confirmed the cause of death as suffocation and heatstroke, a devastating consequence of being trapped in the intense summer heat.

The Incident: Wednesday, April 8, 2026

The events unfolded in a quiet neighborhood where the children were playing near their home.

  • The Disappearance: The two boys were playing with other cousins under the supervision of their grandparents, as their parents were at work. Around 11:15 AM, the two boys separated from the group.

  • The CCTV Footage: Security footage reviewed by investigators shows the children approaching a dilapidated car parked in a private, unfenced lot. They were seen struggling with the door before eventually gaining access through the driver’s side.

  • The Discovery: After realizing the boys were missing, an immediate search was launched by family and neighbors. At approximately 2:15 PM—nearly three hours after they were last seen—the children were discovered unconscious inside the vehicle.

Medical Response and Outcome

  • Emergency Efforts: Village fire and rescue teams were alerted immediately. One child was tragically declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

  • The Second Victim: The second boy was found in critical condition and rushed to the intensive care unit. Despite the “shining light” of hope from medical staff who worked through the day to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 11:00 PM that same night.

  • The Cause: Medical experts cited extreme heat and lack of oxygen as the primary factors. Temperatures inside a closed vehicle in the Philippines can rise to fatal levels within minutes during the dry season.

“This is a pain no parent should ever have to endure. We are pleading with the community to be more vigilant and for car owners to ensure their vehicles are not death traps for curious children.” — PMaj. George Francis Molina, Station 6 Commander

Status of the Investigation

The Olongapo City Police Station 6 is currently handling the inquiry into the “unexplained” tragedy.

  • The Vehicle: The car owner told police the vehicle had been non-operational and parked in the same spot for over three years. He believed the vehicle was locked, but the children were able to force their way inside.

  • The Guardians: At the time of the incident, the children were left with older cousins while the grandparents briefly stepped out.

  • No Charges Filed: The parents of the victims have stated they do not intend to press charges, viewing the event as a horrific and “senseless” accident.

A Call for Vigilance

Authorities have used this tragedy to issue a stern reminder to the public:

  1. Remove Hazards: Owners of abandoned or “junk” cars are urged to dispose of them properly or ensure they are stored in fenced, inaccessible areas.

  2. Constant Supervision: Parents are reminded that during the summer break, children require constant monitoring, especially near parked vehicles.

  3. Community Awareness: Neighbors are encouraged to check on any suspicious activity or children playing near potentially dangerous machinery or derelict properties.

Honoring the Victims

The two cousins will be laid to rest on Tuesday, April 14. The families have asked for privacy and for the public to refrain from speculative or judgmental comments during their time of immense sorrow.

In Loving Memory: We stand with the families in Barangay Barretto and Barangay Manganvaca. May these two “shining lights” rest in eternal peace together.
