Obituary Announcement for Jarvis Butts
Jarvis Butts, 43, of Michigan, was found deceased in his cell at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson, Michigan. His death occurred approximately two weeks after he was sentenced to 35 to 60 years in prison following convictions related to a deeply disturbing and widely reported criminal case.
According to court records, Butts had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the death of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris, as well as five additional counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving other minors. Prosecutors described aspects of the case as involving predatory behavior and manipulation of vulnerable victims, and the sentencing reflected the severity of the offenses.
Butts had recently begun serving his prison sentence when correctional staff discovered him unresponsive in his cell. Emergency protocols were immediately initiated, but he was pronounced deceased at the facility. At this time, the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation by correctional authorities and the appropriate investigative agencies.
Officials have stated that there is currently no confirmed indication of foul play, though a full review is ongoing in accordance with standard procedures. Fellow inmates and staff interviews, as part of preliminary inquiries, have not yet provided evidence suggesting external involvement.
The case that led to Butts’ incarceration had already drawn significant public attention due to the nature of the charges and the age of the victim involved. Law enforcement and prosecutors previously emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and the long-term impact on the victims and their families.
As with all in-custody deaths, authorities will continue to conduct a formal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his passing. Additional findings will be released as they become available.
No further details have been confirmed at this time.
