FATAL CRASH ON I-95: SEMI-TRUCK DRIVER KILLED AFTER STRIKING DEBRIS

“A Loss in Volusia County: Ejection and Median Collision Claim Life of Freightliner Driver”

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL — The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating a deadly incident that occurred in the late-night hours of Saturday, April 11, 2026. A semi-truck driver was killed just north of mile marker 256—near the Port Orange and Daytona Beach area—after an attempt to avoid metal debris in the roadway ended in a catastrophic crash.

The Incident: Saturday Night, April 11

At approximately 10:55 PM, emergency responders arrived at northbound Interstate 95 to find a scene of significant destruction.

  • The Vehicle: The crash involved a 2022 Cascadia Freightliner semi-truck-trailer.

  • The Cause: According to the FHP preliminary report, the semi-truck was traveling northbound when the driver encountered metal debris in the travel lanes.

  • The Sequence: In a split-second reaction, the driver swerved to avoid the debris and then swerved back to the left in an attempt to maintain control. However, the vehicle ran off the roadway to the left and entered the center median.

  • The Impact: The left side of the tractor-trailer collided violently with several trees. The force of the impact was so great that the left side of the vehicle was “pulled apart.”

The Outcome and Investigation

Tragically, the driver—who was reportedly ejected from the vehicle during the impact—was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.

  • Identity: The driver’s identity is currently being withheld pending official verification and the notification of next of kin.

  • Ongoing Probe: FHP investigators remained on the scene for several hours into early Sunday morning. They are working to determine where the metal debris originated from and if another vehicle may be responsible for the “unexplained” hazard left in the roadway.

“This is a somber reminder of how quickly conditions can change on the interstate. Striking debris at highway speeds, especially in a heavy commercial vehicle, can have immediate and devastating consequences.” — Florida Highway Patrol Spokesperson

A “Shining Light” for the Trucking Community

While the driver’s name has not yet been released, the trucking community has already begun to share condolences for their fallen colleague. Long-haul drivers often face “senseless and heinous” hazards like unsecured loads from other vehicles, and this incident has sparked renewed calls for motorists to properly secure all cargo.
