“Suspect in Fatal Collier County DUI Crash Formally Denies Charges; Investigation into Prior Traffic Stop Continues”
NAPLES, FL — Genise Gardenia Taylor, 24, appeared in court on Monday to formally respond to charges stemming from a fatal wrong-way crash on I-75 (Alligator Alley) that occurred last month. Taylor entered a plea of not guilty to charges of DUI Manslaughter and Vehicular Homicide in the death of Arthur Gilbert.
The Incident: Wednesday, March 18, 2026
The collision occurred in the early morning hours on a stretch of I-75 in Collier County.
-
The Crash: According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Taylor was operating a 2023 Honda Civic traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75. Near mile marker 105, her vehicle collided head-on with a 2017 Buick Envision driven by Gilbert.
-
The Fatality: Arthur Gilbert, a 96-year-old resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. He would have celebrated his 97th birthday just last week.
-
Impairment Evidence: FHP investigators stated that Taylor’s blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.213 at the time of the crash—nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08.
The Controversy: The Prior Traffic Stop
One of the most scrutinized aspects of the case involves an encounter between Taylor and law enforcement just two hours before the fatal collision.
-
The Stop: A Collier County Sheriff’s deputy stopped Taylor for speeding earlier that morning. Despite her later recorded BAC, the deputy released Taylor after the traffic stop.
-
The Connection: Prosecutors have alleged that Taylor was acquainted with the deputy who performed the stop. In a recorded jailhouse call released by investigators, Taylor is reportedly heard saying, “It was a cop that I knew.”
-
The Investigation: The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has launched an internal investigation to determine why Taylor was permitted to continue driving rather than being detained or evaluated for impairment during the initial stop.
Status of the Case
Following her arraignment on Monday, Taylor remains in custody.
-
Bond Status: A judge previously ordered that Taylor be held without bond pending trial, citing the severity of the charges and the risk to public safety.
-
Defense Strategy: By entering a not guilty plea, the defense team will now begin the discovery process to review FHP’s evidence, including the internal sheriff’s office investigation and the accuracy of the BAC testing.
-
Next Hearing: The court has scheduled a pre-trial conference for late May.
Remembering Arthur Gilbert
Arthur Gilbert’s family and friends gathered on April 9 to celebrate what would have been his 97th birthday. His wife, Pamela Gilbert, has spoken publicly about the loss, choosing to focus on celebrating his long and full life rather than the anger surrounding the circumstances of the crash.
“I couldn’t put my energy into that anger. The law will take care of whatever needs to happen.” — Pamela Gilbert
