JUSTICE REOPENED: THE WIMBLEDON PREP SCHOOL TRAGEDY

“Investigation Revived: Suspect Re-Arrested After Families Challenge Findings in 2023 School Crash”

WIMBLEDON, UK — Two years after a Land Rover ploughed into a garden party at The Study Preparatory School, the investigation into the deaths of two eight-year-old girls has entered a critical new phase. While the case was initially closed without charges, a relentless push for accountability by the victims’ families has led to a formal review and the re-arrest of the driver.

The Incident: July 6, 2023

The tragedy occurred during a outdoor tea party celebrating the final day of the summer term.

  • The Crash: At 9:54 AM, a gold Land Rover Defender veered off Camp Road, crashed through a wooden fence, and drove onto the school lawn where children and parents were gathered.

  • The Victims: Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, both eight years old, died from their injuries. Nuria’s mother was among several others who were hospitalised with serious injuries.

  • The Scene: The London Ambulance Service declared a major incident, deploying 15 ambulances and an air ambulance to the school near Wimbledon Common.

The Legal Controversy: A Battle for Truth

The case has been marked by a complex legal back-and-forth regarding the driver’s culpability.

  • The Medical Defense: In June 2024, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) initially decided not to charge the driver, Claire Freemantle. Neurological experts concluded she had suffered an “unanticipated” epileptic seizure, her first such medical episode.

  • The Families’ Rejection: The parents of Nuria and Selena expressed deep skepticism, stating that “justice has neither been done, nor has been seen to be done.” They raised concerns about the thoroughness of the forensic investigation and the lack of a transparent process to interrogate the evidence.

  • The Re-Arrest: Following an internal review by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Review Group, the investigation was reopened in late 2024. In January 2025, Claire Freemantle was re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving as new lines of inquiry were pursued.

Status of the Investigation (April 2026)

The case remains in the hands of the Metropolitan Police and the CPS as they review fresh forensic data.

  • Current Charges: As of mid-April 2026, the driver remains under investigation. The police have not yet confirmed if formal charges will be brought before a jury.

  • The Inquest: A full coroner’s inquest—which the families hope will provide a “deep and thorough review” of the evidence—is expected to proceed once the criminal investigation concludes.

A Community Untied in Grief

The loss of Nuria and Selena continues to resonate deeply within Wimbledon.

  • The Memorial: In July 2025, on the second anniversary of the crash, the community unveiled two commemorative benches on Wimbledon Common.

  • The Legacy: Nuria is remembered as a “talented and cheeky” girl who loved the piano, while Selena was described as a “modest and able” student with a “twinkle in her eye.”

“We remain committed to uncovering the truth… we will continue our fight until we have the answers we deserve.” — Statement from the Lau and Sajjad Families
