SEFFNER, FL — The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has identified 17-year-old Elijah Battiste as the victim of a fatal three-vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday night, April 11, 2026. Battiste, a respected athlete and member of the U.S. Virgin Islands U20 National Soccer Team, died from his injuries at a local hospital.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:00 PM on State Road 574 (MLK Jr. Blvd) near Chastain Road.

The Initial Impact: A 40-year-old man from Mulberry was driving a Nissan Versa eastbound when, for reasons still under investigation, he veered into the westbound lane. He collided nearly head-on with Battiste’s Volkswagen Passat.

The Secondary Strike: The force of the head-on collision left both vehicles disabled in the roadway. Moments later, a Ford F-150 traveling behind the initial wreckage slammed into the driver’s side door of Battiste’s Volkswagen.

The Hit-and-Run: Immediately following the second impact, the driver of the Ford F-150 fled the scene on foot. Law enforcement is currently utilizing K-9 units and forensic evidence from the abandoned truck to identify this individual.
