FATAL TUNNEL COLLISION AT CANYON TUNNEL PROJECT SITE

“One Dead, One Injured Following Construction Collapse Near Knights Ferry”

KNIGHTS FERRY, CA — Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded to a tragic incident at the Canyon Tunnel Project site, located northeast of Knights Ferry, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The South San Joaquin Irrigation District (SSJID) confirmed that a structural collapse within the tunnel led to the death of a construction worker.

The Incident: Tuesday, April 14, 2026

The accident was reported to emergency dispatchers at approximately 3:45 PM in a remote area near Sonora and Schell roads.

  • The Initial Call: Modesto Fire officials received reports of two workers trapped following a collapse at the project site. Due to the remote location on private property, reaching the scene required coordination between several departments.

  • The Response: Crews from the Modesto Fire Department, Stanislaus Consolidated Fire District, Cal Fire, and the sheriff’s offices of both Stanislaus and Calaveras counties assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts.

  • Casualties: Upon arrival, rescuers located one individual outside the tunnel entrance with minor to moderate injuries. That worker was stabilized and transported to a local hospital. A second individual was discovered inside the tunnel and was tragically declared deceased at the scene.

The Canyon Tunnel Project

The accident occurred at a site designed specifically to improve worker safety and infrastructure reliability.

  • Project Scope: The Canyon Tunnel is a joint $84 million project between the South San Joaquin Irrigation District and the Oakdale Irrigation District. It involves the construction of a 12,000-foot bypass tunnel for the Joint Supply Canal.

  • Purpose: The new tunnel was intended to bypass a high-risk, unstable rock slope downstream of the Goodwin Dam that has historically been prone to landslides. Ironically, the project’s goal was to provide a “safer work environment” for district personnel.

  • Timing of the Incident: Just hours before the collapse, the SSJID had posted a video update on their official channels showing active tunneling work being conducted inside the structure.

Investigation & Status

The construction site has been secured, and all tunneling activities have been suspended pending a thorough safety investigation.

  • Cause of Collapse: As of Wednesday morning, it remains unclear what triggered the structural failure. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigators are expected to arrive at the scene to examine the shoring and excavation protocols.

  • Condition of the Injured: The survivor’s identity and current medical status have not been released, though their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

  • Identity of the Deceased: The name of the deceased worker is being withheld until the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office completes the notification of next of kin.

Community and Agency Response

The SSJID and Oakdale Irrigation District issued a joint statement expressing their condolences to the families of the workers involved.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected by this tragic accident. We are cooperating fully with authorities to determine exactly what happened and to ensure the safety of everyone on-site.” — SSJID Official Statement

Traffic Advisory

While the site is located on private land, residents in the Knights Ferry area may continue to see a heavy presence of investigator vehicles and heavy equipment moving through Sonora and Schell roads over the next several days.

Current Status: Active Industrial Accident Investigation. The Canyon Tunnel Project, which was slated for completion in 2028, will remain offline until a full safety audit is completed.
